The list looks like this<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>700g loaf of Albany Superior Sliced White Bread, or store brand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2-litre store brand sunflower oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.5kg Iwisa maize meal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.5kg Selati white sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2-litre milk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2kg Tastic rice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.5kg Snowflake cake flour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>175g bar of Dettol Herbal Soap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>9-pack of two-ply Baby Soft toilet paper, or store brand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If some brands aren\u2019t available, alternatives are used but our aim is to keep the products as consistent as possible every month. For a breakdown of our methodology, click&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theoutlier.co.za\/outlier-grocery-basket\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">November&#8217;s basket<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since September, Spar&#8217;s basket has been the most expensive option. This month our nine staples will set you back more than R431 at Spar \u2013 that\u2019s R39 more expensive than the same basket of goods at Woolworths, our cheapest option this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-600-wide size is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/editor.mediahack.co.za\/theoutlier\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/11\/Group-54-600x598.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83777\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Your grocery basket: November 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>At Spar, Checkers and Shoprite prices have increased in the past two months, whereas Pick n Pay and Woolworths have seen a dip, as of November. We have since switched over to the 9-pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A CPI perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We have also been keeping track of grocery prices using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/\">Stats SA<\/a>&#8216;s Consumer Price Index (CPI) reports, which are released every month. These numbers are calculated as average prices from retailers that are collected by StatSA through different mediums &#8211; fieldwork and online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prices of some staple goods, including sunflower oil, tomatoes and salt, have increased tremendously in the past five years. In September 2017, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/publications\/P0141\/P0141September2017.pdf\">CPI<\/a> was 5.1%.
