The list looks like this<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>700g loaf of Albany Superior Sliced White Bread, or store brand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2-litre store brand sunflower oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.5kg Iwisa maize meal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.5kg Selati white sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2-litre store brand milk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2kg Tastic rice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.5kg Snowflake cake flour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>175g bar of Dettol Herbal Soap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>9-pack of 2-ply toilet paper, average price over all brands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If some brands aren\u2019t available, alternatives are used, but our aim is to keep the products as consistent as possible every month. For a breakdown of our methodology, click&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theoutlier.co.za\/outlier-grocery-basket\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">February&#8217;s basket<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food Lover\u2019s Market beat Woolworths to the cheapest spot by R11.04. It&#8217;s the store&#8217;s third time in the top spot since entering our comparison in December. This month, Spar was the most expensive retailer, R48.04 more expensive for February&#8217;s basket of nine staples compared with Food Lover\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/editor.mediahack.co.za\/theoutlier\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/03\/Group-6-1-1-400x400.png\" alt=\"February 2023's grocery basket\" class=\"wp-image-84440\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">February 2023&#8217;s grocery basket<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> In February we averaged the prices of the 9-pack of 2-ply toilet papers because the same brand was not available across all stores. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The price of protein<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also looked at what different proteins like chicken and fish cost across the same six retailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For chicken breasts, Food Lover\u2019s Market was the most affordable option at R69.99 a kilogram versus Woolworths at R124.99.
