Granted, the 6.65 terawatt hours (TWh) it generated is tiny in comparison with the 327TWh China produced that year, and it has a long way to go to even get into the ranks of top 10 solar generators. Nonetheless, it\u2019s the only African country on the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa is seriously underachieving given that the continent has <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/220b2862-33a6-47bd-81e9-00e586f4d384\/AfricaEnergyOutlook2022.pdf#page=17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60% of the world\u2019s solar potential<\/a>, according to the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/editor.mediahack.co.za\/theoutlier\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/09\/2023-09-15-Soaking-up-the-sun-600x600.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86233\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa generated close to 40% of the 17.12TWh of solar power generated in Africa in 2021. Even the continent as a whole wouldn\u2019t have made it onto the top 10. Egypt is Africa\u2019s next biggest solar power producer, its 4.8TWh was 28% of the continent\u2019s output and Morocco\u2019s 1.8TWh made up 11%. Coal dominates South Africa&#8217;s energy mix (86%). Egypt uses gas-power stations for 83% of its energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/editor.mediahack.co.za\/theoutlier\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/09\/2023-09-15SolarPie-9900000000079e3c-600x600.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86234\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>African imports of solar panels from China increased rapidly in 2023, driven largely by South Africa, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mediahack.createsend1.com\/t\/d-l-vtkiyuk-l-m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest data released by Ember<\/a>. Ember tracks Chinese customs data on solar panel exports. Chinese exports of panels account for around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mediahack.createsend1.com\/t\/d-l-vtkiyuk-l-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80% of the global solar panel market<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SA imported panels equivalent to 3.7GW in the first 7 months of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/editor.mediahack.co.za\/theoutlier\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/09\/solarpanels2-9900000000079e3c-600x600.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86235\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa generates less solar power than far smaller regions such as Oceania (31.77TWh) and Latin America (50.55TWh). It even generated less than some countries in Europe, such as Italy (25TWh) and Spain (27TWh).
