{"id":86775,"date":"2024-01-28T14:48:48","date_gmt":"2024-01-28T14:48:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/?p=86775"},"modified":"2025-11-17T17:41:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T17:41:10","slug":"small-generators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/index.php\/2024\/01\/28\/small-generators\/","title":{"rendered":"Business takes up the challenge of loadshedding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Between 2018 and 2023 more than 1,300 energy projects were registered with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of these projects (85%) were under 1MW. These \u2018smaller\u2019 installs are primarily those done by businesses, farms and shopping centres looking to bolster their energy supply against the threat of loadshedding. A 1MW installation is roughly enough to power&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mediahack.createsend1.com\/t\/d-i-vuuthll-l-t\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">650 average homes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nersa\u2019s registrations do not include the much larger REIPP projects like the solar and wind farms that are focused on putting power into the national grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 1,310 projects licensed, 1,109 have been installs of under 1MW. There are also 130 projects of between 1MW and 10MW, and 71 projects larger than 10MW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/SelfGeneration.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86776\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:600px;height:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/SelfGeneration.png 810w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/SelfGeneration-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/SelfGeneration-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/SelfGeneration-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Smaller than 1MW<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of the Nersa registrations under 1MW are by businesses taking charge of their electricity security after 495 days of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mediahack.createsend1.com\/t\/d-i-vuuthll-l-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blackouts<\/a>&nbsp;in the past 3 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agriculture and real estate businesses registered over half of these &lt;1MW energy installations. Unsurprisingly, solar made up the vast majority of these. A third of them were for the agricultural industry, with solar panels installed on fruit and dairy farms. Agriculture is followed by consumables (grocery chains, food manufacturers and the tobacco industry) and the real estate industry as the top installers of alternative solar power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rest of the country<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The provinces with the most registered capacity are the North West, Northern Cape and Free State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"811\" height=\"811\" src=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/NersaMap.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86780\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:600px;height:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/NersaMap.png 811w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/NersaMap-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/NersaMap-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/NersaMap-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: An earlier version of this article stated that the&nbsp;REIPP projects&nbsp;were included in Nersa\u2019s list of registrations,&nbsp;but&nbsp;this&nbsp;is not the case.
