{"id":90629,"date":"2025-07-14T07:53:56","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T07:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/?p=90629"},"modified":"2025-12-01T19:35:53","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T19:35:53","slug":"this-week-in-charts-11-july-2025-us-tariffs-battery-storage-internet-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/index.php\/2025\/07\/14\/this-week-in-charts-11-july-2025-us-tariffs-battery-storage-internet-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"This week in charts: 11 July 2025 (US tariffs, battery storage, internet in South Africa)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This week&#8217;s news in charts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"us-tariffs\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>US Tariffs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>United States President Donald Trump\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2025\/04\/07\/2025-06063\/regulating-imports-with-a-reciprocal-tariff-to-rectify-trade-practices-that-contribute-to-large-and\">reciprocal trade tariff<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2025\/04\/07\/2025-06063\/regulating-imports-with-a-reciprocal-tariff-to-rectify-trade-practices-that-contribute-to-large-and?utm_source=outlierafrica.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=118-outlier-newsletter-11-july-2025-full-edition\">s<\/a> announced on 2 April were due to come into effect this week, but instead he extended the 90-day moratorium to 1 August. He also sent letters to 14 countries, informing them of their \u2018new\u2019 tariffs. South Africa and Tunisia were the only two African countries that got one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s \u2018new\u2019 tariff is the same 30% as the old one from April. Tunisia\u2019s tariff was reduced from 28% to 25%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Trump_s_tariffs_on_Africa.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Trump_s_tariffs_on_Africa.png 810w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Trump_s_tariffs_on_Africa-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Trump_s_tariffs_on_Africa-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Trump_s_tariffs_on_Africa-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/07\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-continues-enforcement-of-reciprocal-tariffs-and-announces-new-tariff-rates\/\">fact sheet<\/a> on the White House website which states that \u2018President Trump is the best trade negotiator in history\u2019, also suggests he may be open to more trade discussions and deals. It\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess whether the 30% tariff will be implemented on 1 August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa said that South Africa will continue with its \u2018diplomatic efforts towards a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade relationship\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s platinum, gold, coal, manganese and chrome are among products have been excluded from the US tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uncertainty has reportedly already had a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c4g8re5el87o\">serious impact<\/a> on Lesotho, which faces 50% tariffs, the highest in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1<strong> Elsewhere: One of the most interesting ways we\u2019ve seen of visualising the impact of these tariffs on African countries is the <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/data.one.org\/analysis\/tariff-turbulence-simulator\"><strong>Tariff Turbulence Simulator<\/strong><\/a><strong> from the <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/africa\/\"><strong>ONE Campaign<\/strong><\/a><strong>. Battery energy storage systems are a bit like giant rechargeable batteries storing excess electricity generated by sources, like solar or wind, so they can be used when needed. In 2024 there was 69GW of battery storage deployed around the world, just over half of it in China, followed by the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, battery storage cost $375 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). By 2024 that price had dropped to $165\/kWh. The price decrease has driven a surge in the number of new battery storage projects being built around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa is no exception. In the last year and a half, 18 preferred bidders have been appointed to build grid-linked battery storage capacity under the government\u2019s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of them, the 153MW Red Sands Battery Energy Storage System, the largest standalone system in the country, reached <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/globeleq.com\/globeleqs-red-sands-battery-energy-storage-project-reaches-financial-close\/\">financial close<\/a> this month. The project, which is near Upington in the Northern Cape, has a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy-storage.news\/africas-largest-standalone-bess-reaches-commercial-close-in-south-africa\/\">15-year purchase agreement<\/a> with Eskom and is expected to be completed in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2600\ufe0f Sun power<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/BRICS_solar.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/BRICS_solar.png 810w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/BRICS_solar-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/BRICS_solar-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/BRICS_solar-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A report by energy think tank <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ember-energy.org\/latest-insights\/solar-brics-emerging-economies-now-lead-the-worlds-clean-energy-race\/\">Ember<\/a> shows that the BRICS countries \u2013 Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, plus Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates \u2013 together accounted for half (51%) of global solar electricity generation in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China is the driving force. It generated 39% of the world\u2019s solar electricity in 2024, up from 12% in 2014, according to the Ember report &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ember-energy.org\/latest-insights\/solar-brics-emerging-economies-now-lead-the-worlds-clean-energy-race\/\">Solar BRICS: Emerging economies now lead the world&#8217;s clean energy race.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/top_22_solar-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/top_22_solar-1.png 810w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/top_22_solar-1-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/top_22_solar-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/top_22_solar-1-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa contributed 0.9% of the world\u2019s solar generation and ranked 16th out of the top 20 solar producers in the world in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But China leads by a huge margin, generating 839 terawatt hours (TWh) of solar electricity in 2024. The United States was second, generating 303TWh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three other BRICS countries were in the top 20, namely India, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"internet-disconnect\">\ud83d\udcf1 Internet disconnect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost three quarters of South Africans have access to the internet using a mobile phone. Only 14.5% of them have a fixed home internet connection. The home internet numbers are largely skewed by the higher numbers in the Western Cape and Gauteng. In most other provinces the percentage of people with fixed home internet is well under 10% according to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icasa.org.za\/legislation-and-regulations\/state-of-the-ict-sector-in-south-africa-2025-report\">March 2025 State of the ICT Sector in South Africa report<\/a> by Icasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/InternetHow.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/InternetHow.png 810w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/InternetHow-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/InternetHow-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/outliereditor.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/InternetHow-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In amongst the many tables in the report is a 2024 summary of the percentage of urban residents covered by newer mobile data technologies like 5G. Almost all of South Africa\u2019s urban residents are currently covered by 3G and 4G.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5G coverage is highest in the Western Cape and Gauteng, and significantly lower in the Northern Cape and Free State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3G networks are being phased out in South Africa and all 2G and 3G networks should be shut down by December 2027.
