Gauteng is facing increasing water security risks due to infrastructure failures and climate-induced drought.
According to Rand Water, which purifies water from the Vaal River System for consumption in Gauteng, the province’s three metros – Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane – use 77% of the 5,202-million litres it supplies each day.
However, 35% of the water supplied to Joburg, 28% supplied to Ekurhuleni and 33% to Tshwane is lost to physical leaks.
