For the first time, World Athletics will award prize money at the Olympic Games this year, financially rewarding athletes for ‘achieving the pinnacle of sporting success’.
At Paris 2024, $2.4-million will be split among the athletes who win a gold medal in each of the 48 athletics events. This works out at $50,000 – just under R1-million – per gold medal.
Individual South African athletes who win gold at the Games will be given R400,000 by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee. Members of the Blitzboks will each receive R50,000 for winning a bronze medal.
