Athletes from 206 countries competed in Paris 2024, with 91 nations winning medals. Among those were 12 African countries, whose athletes won 39 medals between them at the Games, which ended on Sunday 11 August.
Kenya emerged as Africa’s top Olympic performer with 11 medals, including four golds. The Kenyan team, comprising 72 athletes, excelled in middle-distance events, clinching gold in the 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m races.
South Africa won six medals, including one gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke. Between them, South Africa and Kenya won 40% of the continent’s medals.
Egypt sent the largest African team, with three of its 148 athletes earning medals. Cabo Verde, which sent just seven athletes, secured a bronze medal in boxing.
The US, which sent 592 athletes to Paris, led the 2024 medals table with 126 medals. China, which sent 388 athletes, came in second with 91 medals.
